It’s baseball season! You a Reds fan? No. Cubs? No. NOT a Yankee fan!!! What?!! Baseball’s a game of strategy and big plays. That’s partly because it’s a slow game. The game stops. The manager goes out to talk with the pitcher, all the infield comes into a huddle. The game stops. Pinch hitter. Football’s not much better. After each play the players have to get back to the huddle. And after each score all kinds of non-play events happen. The TD celebration. The extra point. Basketball is faster, but there are those darned free throws and the media timeouts.
Now if Jesus had been an athlete, he would have been a soccer player. Soccer is movement, that’s all they do in that game. Everybody’s always running. And in soccer…there are NO TIMEOUTS. With Jesus, from the beginning of his ministry till the end there were few down times. Today, ministers celebrate their 30, 40, 50 years in ministry. All of Jesus’s time added up to 3 1/2 years! That was it. But, oh my, what he did in that time! It was intense He built relationships with people, he taught them, he equipped them to be able to live life the way God intended it to be lived.
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” John 14
Don’t take my word for any of this. You can check it out yourself in the Bible in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Go ahead. Read about this astounding Jesus!
David Beckham may be a great soccer player, but I think I’d rather have Jesus on my team. And we’d be…the LA Angels…no, already taken…Detroit Disciples…Bay City Believers…. If you can come up with a better name…let me know what it is. If it’s good I’ll add it to my list here.
