Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

Five movies you should see before you die (in no particular order):

1. The Shawshank Redemption

2. Dead Poet’s Society

3. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

4. Braveheart

5. Planes, Trains & Automobiles

My dream in high school was to do a Ferris Bueller. I didn’t have the guts. I did go off campus once during lunch, which was against the rules. But then, I didn’t really enjoy lunch because I was worried about getting caught trying to sneak back on campus!

Of course, these listed movies are all fictional stories. I guess you might say “Braveheart” was historical fiction. Some movies, especially ones on tv, may say “based on a true story.” Many need to say LOOSELY based on a true story.

The stories in the Bible are not fiction. Nor, are they based on a true story. The stories in the Bible are actual events. They’re true. So, when you read one, remember those were real people, not actors, and those events actually took place. That might cause you to read in an entirely different light.

If you’ll excuse me, I’m headed over to my friend’s house. He’s going to show me his dad’s 1961 Ferrari GT250. What’d you say? Take it out for a spin? Oh, no, his dad would kill us! (I think I see a parade in the distance. What? I hear singing, “Shake it up, baby, twist and shout.” It’s gonna be a good day!)

Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth….  2 Timothy 3

Watch closely. Ferris? Or me?

Pay It Forward

Do you remember this 13 year old movie “Pay It Forward”?

A kid named Trevor is caught up by an intriguing assignment from his new social studies teacher. The assignment: Think of something to change the world and put it into action. Trevor comes up with the idea of paying a favor, not back, but forward. Repaying good deeds not with payback, but with new good deeds done to three new people. His efforts to complete his idea revolutionize his life, his teacher’s, his mother’s, and an ever-widening circle of people he doesn’t even know. Pretty cool, huh.

You may not realize it, but your life has the potential to bless everyone you encounter.

Part of God’s plan is to work through the people who have linked up with him to make the world a better place to live. You can be a part of this. In fact, God wants you to be a part of it. You, your life, the way you live it, has the potential to bless everyone you come in contact with each and every day. A kind word. A smile. An unexpected action. A small courtesy. There’re a myriad of ways!

Why simply walk through life when you can dance through life with purpose. Where you can be a blessing for those who meet you. Try it. In doing so, I’m betting you will benefit as much as the people around you.

God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. 1 Peter 4

Bond. James Bond.

You just thought: “James Bond,” didn’t you? Pretty famous set of numbers. The new James Bond film “Skyfall” is a great film. Daniel Craig makes an exceptional Mr. Bond (did you use a British accent when you read that name?). Oh, and Javier Bardem is a worthy and creepy adversary.

There’s one scene where 007 is fighting the villain on top of a train…in his suit, as usual. A hole is torn through the top of a train car and Bond jumps through it to the train floor. He gets up, brushes off his suit coat, and casually starts walking down the aisle. Realistic? Nope. But, we don’t go to see James Bond movies for realism.

Your life, though, is real. If you or I fell like that we’d be in the hospital for weeks (not that we’d ever, ever be fighting someone on top of a train!).

You have real problems. God is real. He understands real, actual problems. He offers to help you solve them, to get through them. Whether it’s a hiccup, a set-back, or a towering obstacle, God will come to your aid. You can count on him. Time after time after time.

You’re not a secret agent. You don’t go by a number. Your life is real. God is waiting to help you. Call on him. See what he can do.

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand. Isaiah 41
