This has been the summer of NO RAIN. The repetitive forecast has been sunny and hot and dry…really dry. But, when it does rain, it usually storms. The other day during a thunderstorm huge trees were uprooted. The weather forecaster said the reason was because the ground was so dry it was like sand. The roots of the trees were not securely grounded. When the storm winds came along, the entire tree was blown down!
The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. Matthew 7
Jesus used an example like that when he was explaining how important his teachings are to you. He said when you connect with him and live his way, it’s like building your house on a rock. When the storm winds and rains come, your house is safe and sound. Where you don’t want your house built is on the sand. Then, when the wind and rain come…crash!
Some of the those huge, majestic trees have stood for decades, yet one summer of drought and one storm and they fell.
Today…think about where your house is built. Is it on a rock? Or, is it on the sand? You know, though, you can always rebuild your house.
Today is the 4th of July! A day off! The corn knee-high! Summertime hot! Cook-outs! Family and friends! Watermelon! Fireworks!
This holiday came about in celebration of our country’s independence. Our forefathers wanted to dump taxation without representation. And, they did! They wanted freedom. To be separate from Britain. Independence is good. It’s a great feeling being independent in your life. Free from outside control. Able to do what you want. Being free! That’s one of our greatest values as Americans.
For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 2 Corinthians 17
Connecting yourself to God increases your freedom. How can that possibly be? Well…God is a good counselor. By attaching yourself to him, you are free to live life. He’ll guide you, he’ll get you to the places you need to get to. There’ll be no more: Is this right or wrong? Am I supposed to do this? And trying to make the decision yourself. You can rely on God to point you in the right direction through the Bible and through prayer and through your church community.
But freedom comes with a cost. An old song lyric says: “Find the cost of freedom buried in the ground.” Our countrymen pay for our freedom with their lives. The freedom God offers you was also paid for. With the death of Jesus. That’s what makes it so valuable.
We live in a country where we have freedom. Have you thought about living your life with the freedom God offers you? Free to you…already paid for by Jesus.
