Katniss & Peeta, the Independent Ones

When they arrived back in Jerusalem, Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out the people buying and selling animals for sacrifices. He knocked over the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves. Mark 11

I’ve read the books! I’m ready to see the films! No, not talking about “Harry Potter.” No, not talking about “Twilight.” I’m talking about “The Hunger Games”!!! Katniss and Peeta and Gale. Yes…and Cinna, my personal favorite, played in the movie by rock star Lenny Kravitz! I saw in a magazine Josh Hutcherson, the actor who plays Peeta, said, “Peeta  believes that no matter what, you can’t become a piece in someone else’s game.” Being used by someone else is demeaning. It can make you feel you’re of less value, like you’re not needed. That’s what happens to Katniss and Peeta. They aren’t playing the game because they want to; they’re playing the game because the Capitol forces them to. All the contestants are being used to entertain others. Not only do Katniss and Peeta fight to stay alive, they also fight to keep their dignity and value as people.

When Jesus walked this earth, he didn’t play anyone else’s game. The religious leaders of the time hated him because he didn’t act in the ways they thought he should. He didn’t follow their traditions. In the passage today the religious leaders had allowed the place of worship to be corrupted. Money changers were selling people offerings…and they were ripping them off! Jesus, seeing what was going on, refused to ignore it. By doing nothing he could allow himself to be used to show approval. Instead, wham!…he upset the tables, drove the money changers out! Everyone knew where he stood. Jesus was his own person.

How do you feel when you’re being used? How might you prevent that from happening? What does it look like and feel like to be your own person? Jesus can help you to see your value, your dignity, and be your own person.
