Lately we’ve been bombarded with politics, and especially, political speeches. I found a website called factsheet.org that checks the facts of each speech. For instance, when Republican VP candidate Paul Ryan said he ran a marathon in under three hours, the website found out it was actually 4 hours, 1 minute, 25 seconds. Of course, he wasn’t the only candidate to get facts wrong. Barack Obama, Mitt Romney, and Joe Biden mess up regularly, too. In fact, when you think about politics in general, you usually figure you can’t depend on the facts.
Dependable is being constantly reliable and trustworthy. This is a teaching in the Bible…being dependable, loyal, faithful. Being the kind of person others can count on. But, it goes even further than that. It allows you to continue in your commitments even if it means personal sacrifice. You know the kind of person I’m talking about? That one whom you have never forgotten because of the length he/she went to…just to help you. That person sacrificed for you.
You can be THAT person. You can become dependable. The Bible is full of examples of people like that. Check it out. Be the kind of person who is steadfast and sure in helping others.
Can you be a politician and be dependable? I’m not sure. Not only are their facts not dependable, but most, when they get elected, don’t do what they said they would do when campaigning!
A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need. Proverbs 17
My huge guilty pleasure of the summer is…”Big Brother.” I’m slightly embarrassed to say I’ve seen every episode from every season. And this is season 14! Oh, well…I plead guilty to loving the craziness and antics.
The other night a member of the house named Dan pulled off one of the greatest ploys in the history of the game to avoid leaving. It involved lying, a little deception, some throwing a friend under the bus, and lots of manipulation. But, hey, that’s the game. That’s what it’s all about. Doing whatever’s necessary to win $500,000.00. Everyone knows that going into the game, yet no one likes it when it’s done to them!
However, you don’t want your real life to be that way. You want to be able to trust people, to earn the trust of others. You know the quote “no man (or woman) is an island, entire of itself”? It’s true. You can’t always stand alone; you have to depend on others at times.
…you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him,,,, Ephesians 4
Jesus is one of those you can depend on. Not just sometimes. All the time. Everything that comes from Jesus is truth. He doesn’t lie. Some Bibles put all the words that Jesus actually said in red print. All those words in red are true. Could you use a friend you can rely on every single time?
“Big Brother” is an artificial environment. Sadly, though, it’s not as far away from the world you and I actually live in as we would like to think. When you’re hanging out there on that limb all alone, and the limb’s beginning to crack…reach out for the hand of the faithful Jesus.
