Knee High By the Fourth of July

Today is the 4th of July! A day off! The corn knee-high! Summertime hot! Cook-outs! Family and friends! Watermelon! Fireworks!

This holiday came about in celebration of our country’s independence. Our forefathers wanted to dump taxation without representation. And, they did! They wanted freedom. To be separate from Britain. Independence is good. It’s a great feeling being independent in your life. Free from outside control. Able to do what you want. Being free! That’s one of our greatest values as Americans.

For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 2 Corinthians 17

Connecting yourself to God increases your freedom. How can that possibly be? Well…God is a good counselor. By attaching yourself to him, you are free to live life. He’ll guide you, he’ll get you to the places you need to get to. There’ll be no more: Is this right or wrong? Am I supposed to do this? And trying to make the decision yourself. You can rely on God to point you in the right direction through the Bible and through prayer and through your church community.

But freedom comes with a cost. An old song lyric says: “Find the cost of freedom buried in the ground.” Our countrymen pay for our freedom with their lives. The freedom God offers you was also paid for. With the death of Jesus. That’s what makes it so valuable.

We live in a country where we have freedom. Have you thought about living your life with the freedom God offers you? Free to you…already paid for by Jesus.

Happy Independence Day from G3 and enjoy these fireworks…  (awesome on full screen!)

Life’s a B….

And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
 Isaiah 9

Driving in my car the other day, I read the bumper sticker on the old truck in front of me. “Life’s a bitch!” it said. I’ve heard that one before, I smirked. But, you know, it’s true. Part of what makes it true is all this choosing you have to do every day. You choose to get up 10 minutes early. You choose to be ticked off because of all the frost on your car windows. You choose to be upset about things in your past that are impossible to change. All these choice every day. Are they the right ones? Should you do something else? Tension and anxiety!

The verse today was written long before Jesus was born, but it was a description of him. He’s a wonderful counselor. Someone to help you make decisions, not make them for you, but to assist you. There are no limits on the size of the decisions. It might be helping you find your keys; it might be deciding where to look for new housing.

As you make decisions today…need some help? Get some assistance. Maybe you could change that bumper sticker to read: Life’s a beach…and really mean it! Sun, fun, and less tension.
