About X-rays, Bottle Caps, and Mozart

In Paraguay a chamber orchestra of 20 children uses instruments fashioned out of recycled materials from a landfill, performing the music of Beethoven, and Mozart, Henry Mancini and the Beatles. The sounds of a classical guitar come from two big jelly cans. Used X-rays serve as the skins of a drum set. Bottle caps work perfectly well as keys for a saxophone. Check out this clip from an upcoming documentary.

Amazing, huh. Out of garbage something beautiful is created. And, that’s exactly what God can do with you and me. Out of the garbage that is your life he can create something original and beautiful…a new you! Life can become part of a landfill, trash just taking up space. God takes that life and somehow recreates that rubbish into a person headed in the right direction. Then, he sticks by to keep you on the right path.

It takes your breath away just thinking about what God can do with your life. Think today about choosing not to be part of the landfill, but to allow God to make you part of his orchestra.

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!  2 Corinthians

It’s Beginning To Look a Lot Like…G3

The Beginning. The Emergence. The Genesis. The Commencement.

Beginnings are exciting. It’s a new day. A new starting point.  Your graduation, or…commencement. Your wedding day. The day your first child was born. The day you started school. The day you bought your first new car or truck.

The excitement builds! And, then it begins…you…creating something new in your life.

This Sunday, September 16 a new church is beginning. The G3 Church. The excitement has been building for the last month with each preview service. Sunday is the onset of a new day for G3.

Believe me when I say it’ll be like no other church you’ve ever gone to. Oh, and if you’ve never gone to a church, this is the perfect church for you! A church for people who don’t like church!!!

It happens at Test Middle School, 33 S. 22nd Street, Richmond, IN at 11:00 a.m.

What can you expect? It’ll be fun, loud, and relevant. You won’t be bored! You won’t feel judged, betrayed, or overlooked. G3 is redefining what church is, it’s transforming lives!

Come and see what it’s all about…why…you might just think you’re at a party!!!

For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? Isaiah 43

Starting: This Sunday, September 16 at 11:00 a.m.

Meeting at: Test Middle School, 33 South 22nd Street, Richmond, IN

More Than Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer

When Mark Twain said this, he showed great insight into the human psyche, didn’t he. He understood how we think. That’s why people make bucket lists. So they really do those things they think are important before it’s too late. Life moves right along and you don’t even know it. You know what I’m talking about. School’s out and you just turn around and suddenly school starts again. Your child’s in a new grade. One day you have a baby and it seems like the next day you’re potty training! Zoom! There goes life.

There are always those things you intended to do, but you just never got around to it. Like church. You’re thinking: I know I should be going. I used to go years ago. But, I stopped because…(insert here all those reasons, good and/or bad). You think about going from time to time.

Here’s the good news. What’s happened is past. You could start going to church again. Bad experience last time? Find a church where you feel you belong. Every church is not the same.

There’s a church starting this fall in Richmond, Indiana. It’s different. It’s church redefined. Take a chance. Risk it. See what it’s like. The G3 Church (even the name sounds different!). Don’t end up in 20 years wishing church is something you wish you had done. Church is about you. It’s about your life. It’s meeting God, getting to know him, letting him help you live a better life.

Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.      Psalm 23

Only Borrowed Time

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”  John 8

Life can be hectic. A merry-go-round we just ride and ride. It gives us headaches as we’re hurled forward each day at blinding speed. Some days we pause to think: what are we doing with our lives. Here are some words from the James Morrison song “One Life”:

If I knew yesterday what I know today, where would I be tomorrow?
I won’t let my soul slide away. I’d do whatever it takes
Cause this time’s only borrowed.
I got one life, one life, one life. And I’m gonna live it.
I got one life, one life, one life. And I’m gonna live it right.
He reminds us our souls can “slide away.” We may not even notice. But, he says that’s not going to happen to him. He has one life and he’s gonna “live it right.”

That’s what Jesus was saying to some people in our Bible verse today. He was saying if you follow him your soul won’t “slide away.” He’ll point out the way. He’s reminding them we only have one life and he wants to help them “live it right.”

With the frantic pace of life these days it’s sometimes difficult to see the big picture. Today…stop…take a minute…to think…where are you headed? You only have one life to live. How are you going to make it count? How are you going to live it right?

Brady’s No First Round Pick

“What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.” Mark 9

The NFL draft is over. It was a foregone conclusion by draft time who the Indianapolis Colts would pick…Andrew Luck. The first round picks are the ones with the greatest skills. Teams are banking on those players’ success. But the most interesting ones are the mid-round picks. Those are the players who a coach or general manager believes could be a great player. They aren’t great yet, but they have potential and someone is able to recognize it. Next, the team has to have good coaches who know how to develop that potential. In football terminology it’s called “coaching up” a player. Some of those “potentials” do quite well…like the 2000 sixth round pick…Tom Brady.

Jesus is great at seeing potential. He sees it in everyone. Yes! He sees your potential. He knows you, knows your skills, your abilities, your distinctive features. Ones you may not know you have. And…he has the power to develop you into a better self. It wouldn’t do much good if all he did was see the potential. But Jesus is a great coach! He knows what he’s doing. He can coach you up, get you to a higher level.

In college football not everyone has the choice to be drafted. As the NCAA commercial says most student-athletes end up somewhere other than professional sports. With Jesus…everyone is a potential draftee. It’s your choice to join Jesus.

Fight For Your Right To Party!!!

(Jesus speaking) “Don’t imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace….” Matthew 10

Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys recently passed away. In an article about his life a writer said he started loving the Beastie Boys at 14 because nothing about them was correct. In other words, they were not what was “normal” to all the adults in his life, especially his parents! I’m sure “Fight for Your Right to Party” became his personal anthem. You probably did something like that as a teen. Rebelled against the “establishment.” Hey, it’s part of growing up, right? We can’t be like “them”!

Has the establishment been getting you down lately? Have you thought about starting a revolution? In the Bible Jesus is accurately portrayed as a rebel. He taught about a new way to live life. If there was ever a nonconformist on this earth…it was Jesus. The religious leaders of the time saw him as a renegade. At the very least, he was a maverick, showing people how God could change their lives.

Do you feel like starting a revolt today?!! At your work place? At your school? In your own house? What about starting a revolution in your own life? A revolution of the heart. Join forces with the greatest revolutionary who has ever lived. Jesus.
