Pour Me a Strong One

What you pour into yourself, is what will pour out.

If you’ve said to yourself, you want a better life. A different life. A changed life. You’re going to have to initiate that change. Pour in better, and , better will come out. Don’t pour in gossip if you don’t want people talking about you. Don’t pour in negative thoughts if you want to stay positive.

How do you start to change? Pick one thing. Just one small thing and make a change. Maybe it’s to hang around more positive co-workers. Maybe it’s not to get involved in your friends’ gossip. Pick one thing and work on it. Get that accomplished and move to a second small step.

Improvement take time. But, stick by this principle: What you pour into yourself, is what will pour out. And, that’s what determines who you are. Think about allowing God to help you be make these changes.

A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart. Luke 6

Giving Up Bedazzling

In this world you’re always having to bedazzle someone. Your boss, his boss, your date, your teacher, your parents…. It seems you’re looking to dazzle, make an impression on, to amaze others. But, when you’re trying to impress others, you can’t consistently act like yourself, you have to act like “they” want you to. You’re trying to affect the behavior of someone else.

Let me tell you: There is no freedom like not having to impress everybody. Then, you can be yourself, who you really are. The real you.

When people talk about joining forces with God, all he expects is you showing up as…you. Nothing more. Nothing less. You don’t have to impress God to get his attention. He’s already bedazzled by you.

Nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8

What do you have to change about yourself to belong to God? Nothing. Check him out. He already loves you. Nothing can separate you from his love.

Shift Happens

Shift happens.

Yes, things do shift in life, don’t they. Things change. There is metamorphosis throughout life.

You graduate from high school. Shift. You get married. Shift. You have children. Shift. You change jobs. Shift. Your kids leave home. Shift. You have a health problem. Shift. You retire. Shift. Your spouse passes away. Shift.

You can’t prevent changes in life. By definition life is always changing.

God never changes. As you go through the changes of life, God can be the one constant. He can be the center of your existence. He can keep you in balance, help you get back on your feet. Even through the negative changes, God can be the buoy that moves you back to the surface so you can function again.

Shift happens. That’s a fact of life. But, if you put your life in line with God, he will always be there for you.

I am the Lord, and I do not change. Malachi 3

God. Never. Changes.

The Times They’re A-Changin’

Okay. You hate the life you’re living. You can’t believe you’ve allowed yourself to fall this far. The shape you’re in, the things you’re doing. They’re disgusting to you, it’s beyond your imagination what other people might think if they really knew you. The drugs, the alcohol, the sex. Or, maybe for you, it’s the lying, the stealing, the lost relationships, a secret life. You. Hate. Living. Like. This.

The good news is: You can change!

A long time ago God threw you a rope, you just haven’t grabbed ahold yet. See, God isn’t shocked by you, he isn’t shocked by your behavior no matter how bad it is. Why should he be. He knew everything about you when he invited you into relationship with him. Yes, he’s already invited you to be a part of his family. He wants to help you.

I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. Ezekiel 36

If you pray, will God just miraculously heal you? He could, but that’s usually not how he works. However, if you’ll link yourself to him, if you’ll turn your life over to him, he’ll lead you in the right direction. To a friend who cares, to a church that will help, to a family member who’s been reaching out. To whoever and whatever you need to get back to real life. This is what God does, it’s what he’s all about.

The good news? You can change. Start right this minute.

Lights, Camera, Words…Action!

Some people are all talk. They talk about who they are are and what they’re going to do, but they never do anything. I bet you’ve had a friend like that. The one who says she’s going to help you, the one who says she cares about you. Yet, nothing ever happens. Ever.

You must show the world something not just tell them about it.

You’ve heard the expression “actions speak louder than words.” It’s true. If you’re going to say it then carry it out…or, as my mom would say, “Don’t say it in the first place. Just hush up.”

The Bible says that’s the way it should be with your faith. James, a Christian writer, says:

Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. James 2

That’s a pretty strong statement. He’s saying if you’re just going to talk about your faith and you never put it into action, it’s useless. It’s pointless, ineffective…it’s a dud. You have faith? Then you should be acting like it; people should see it in the life you live. How you live your life reflects the faith you have in your heart.

How strong is your faith? Now, think about your life. Is that faith displayed in your life? If not, how might you change that?

Pot of Gold? How About a Cold One!

I remember as a kid my mom saying there was a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. I tried a few times to follow the rainbow to the end to see if she was right. Nope. No pot of gold. And, no truck of Guinness beer, either!

Does God promise a pot of gold for all who follow him? Sorry, but he doesn’t. He does promise a lot of things, though. One verse in the Bible speaking of God says: “And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises.” Promises like his saying he has plans for you. Good plans for your future and hope for it. He says if you are weary and carrying a burden, he will give you rest. Those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.

God says, if you follow and trust him, he will help you to be at peace. That’s saying a lot for living in this world, isn’t it. This world can be a scary place. Just catch the online news any day or watch a little of CNN on the tube. Bad things happen every day. People are always saying: “I didn’t think this could happen to me.” But…it did.

Here’s a promise of God’s that’s worth more than any pot of gold. He says:

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” John 14

No matter how brave you think you may be, there are times when deep down you are afraid. And, if not for you, for your spouse or child, someone you love. Trust God and you can claim the promise above as your own. Peace. In a world of chaos.
