Pot of Gold? How About a Cold One!

I remember as a kid my mom saying there was a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. I tried a few times to follow the rainbow to the end to see if she was right. Nope. No pot of gold. And, no truck of Guinness beer, either!

Does God promise a pot of gold for all who follow him? Sorry, but he doesn’t. He does promise a lot of things, though. One verse in the Bible speaking of God says: “And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises.” Promises like his saying he has plans for you. Good plans for your future and hope for it. He says if you are weary and carrying a burden, he will give you rest. Those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.

God says, if you follow and trust him, he will help you to be at peace. That’s saying a lot for living in this world, isn’t it. This world can be a scary place. Just catch the online news any day or watch a little of CNN on the tube. Bad things happen every day. People are always saying: “I didn’t think this could happen to me.” But…it did.

Here’s a promise of God’s that’s worth more than any pot of gold. He says:

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” John 14

No matter how brave you think you may be, there are times when deep down you are afraid. And, if not for you, for your spouse or child, someone you love. Trust God and you can claim the promise above as your own. Peace. In a world of chaos.

from The Hundred Acre Wood

“Promise me you’ll always remember that you’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think,” Christopher Robin said to Winnie-the-Pooh.

This quote might be from a children’s book, but it’s really good advice. I’m betting none of us really knows how brave he or she is. Then the moment arrives where you have to be brave…that’s when you find out. Some of us don’t look very strong…but then people can’t see what’s on the inside, can they. For most of us how smart we are depends on how motivated we are. When you have to figure something out, you do it. You know, most of us spend a lot of time underestimating ourselves.

What Jesus sees when he looks at you is: All of you. He sees who you really are…he sees your potential…he knows what you are capable of. Jesus holds to that old U.S. Army slogan “Be all that you can be!” That’s the goal he sees for you. Have you considered having someone like that in your corner? Pulling for you? Guiding you on the paths of life?

There are those times in life when you need someone to put a hand on your shoulder, or hold your hand, or give you a hug and say: “Promise me that you’ll always remember that I’ll be here with you, helping you be all you can be.”

Promise me…you’ll think about Jesus…today.

For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you. Deuteronomy 31
